Don't you only believe because your parents believe?

It is said by many a Christian that they are Christian because their parents are Christian.

This is a sad thing indeed.

"My parents are Christian, so I'm a Christian" is without substance.

It is said by many a Christian that they are Christian because their parents are Christian.

This is a sad thing indeed. Too many people that claim the title of Christian do in fact quite literally give this as their response. Now, I believe that 2020 pushed most of these people out of their churches. To them, their faith wasn't rooted in anything real or practical.

For the one who doesn't accept God's existence, this is a no brainer, and those who claim the name of Christian but place the weight of their belief on their parents, they are in fact substantiating reason for doubt.

However, genetic fallacy goes both ways. It is wrong to believe, merely because your parents believe. It is likewise wrong to reject belief simply because people believe what their parents believe.

The question must be: can our faith be rooted in something deeper?

If not the skeptic is right for pressing hard on this issue.

Reference Points:

1. Prior to Genesis 33:20, Jacob always referred to God as the God of his fathers. However, in v. 33:20, Jacob (whose name has been changed to Israel). He's returned from the journey he set out on in Genesis 28, where he said that the Lord would be his God if the Lord would watch over him and provide for him. V. 33:20 states, "There he set up an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel." That is "God is the God of Israel  or mighty is the God of Israel ." No longer the God of his fathers only, he declares the Lord His God.
